Key Principles/Purpose of Study:

PSHE education prepares pupils for both their futures and their present day-to-day lives and is taught in accordance with pupils’ readiness.

Identity (their personal qualities, attitudes, skills, attributes and achievements and what influences these) & Diversity.

Values

  • (including the notion of universal human rights), Responsibilities (including fairness and justice) and consent (in different contexts) & Power (how it is used and encountered in a variety of contexts including persuasion, bullying, negotiation and ‘win-win’ outcomes).

Resilience

  • (as something to be managed) and resilience (the skills, strategies and ‘inner resources’ we can draw on when faced with challenging change or circumstance)

Social Effectiveness

  • (including different types and in different settings).

Interpersonal Effectiveness

A healthy (including physically, emotionally and socially) balanced lifestyle (including within relationships, work-life, exercise and rest, spending and saving and diet) & Risk (identification, assessment and how to manage risk rather than simply the avoidance of risk for self and others) and safety (including behaviour and strategies to employ in different settings).

To manage risk and make safe choices learners will be given the opportunities to:

 

Primary School Phase

  • recognise, predict and assess risk in different situations, and respond in ways which maintain their own safety and wellbeing
  • recognise that there can be positive as well as negative elements to risk-taking, and take a positive and open-minded approach where this is the case
  • demonstrate self-belief and judgement in making positive, informed choices to benefit their health and wellbeing
  • make choices which are morally right, and resist pressure to do otherwise

 

Secondary School Phase

  • develop the ability to make healthy, informed choices by recognising, predicting and assessing risks effectively
  • understand what is meant by acceptable risk, recognising that this may be different for different people in different circumstances
  • recognise that the implications of risk can be both positive and negative and that opportunities can carry acceptable risk
